Today’s guest of the Daily Cup Podcast features Roberta Perry!
The Power of Free Publicity
I am so excited to have Roberta Perry on the show to talk about how she used the power of free publicity to skyrocket her business!
After years of being selfless and taking care of everyone else’s needs, (OK, that is her humble opinion, but work with her here) Roberta’s skin was dry, itchy and irritated. In 2005, at 43, she finally realized that taking care of her skin and herself was important. She discovered exfoliating products, but like the proverbial Goldilocks, none were completely satisfying her needs and wants. Roberta headed for the kitchen and played like a “mad chemist” to create her own. She mixed up different combinations of botanical oils and after doing extensive research, she realized how lucky she was with the recipe she had created. Roberta brought in her sister and they started ScrubzBody™, in 2006, in her home. The business quickly moved to a renovated garage and then to their first manufacturing/store front, in Bethpage, NY in 2011. Needing larger space, the business moved again in 2014. After all these years, we are proud of the fact that our products are still handcrafted with love in small batches. Michelle passed in February of 2017 and the mission and the love she infused into the business will forever remain the same.
Needing exposure for the business, but on a really tight budget, Roberta turned to HARO (Help a Reporter Out) and started pitching to writers and reporters. Since 2010, she have been published and quoted in over 100 skin care and business articles, blogs and beauty magazines. She was a featured speaker on Indie Business Cruise 2016 and Launch Live Speakers Summit 2016 about getting Free Publicity for your small business. Her book, “The Power of Free Publicity, Using HARO (Help a Reporter Out) to Build Relationships and Get Press Without a PR Firm.” was published in August 2016. Roberta was a panelist for the LI Newsday Connect Small Business Seminar, was a natural remedy segment guest of the Dr. Oz show, which aired on 10/24/14, as well as a food related segment which aired on 2/29/16. She received the 2016 Nassau County Legislature Trailblazer award for charity work. Roberta is also a proud member of Indie Business Network, American Made Matters, Bethpage Chamber of Commerce and Bethpage Kiwanis Club.
